I am writing this review so other pet owners can be fully informed before trusting this practice with their animals. I brought my Shetland Sheepdog, Lilly, to Critter Care Veterinary Hospital in Thorndale after discovering a mass on the side of her face near her mouth. We sought a second opinion because our local vet told us they did not know what the mass was and could not perform surgery if needed. At our initial appointment at Critter Care, I was again told they did not know what the growth was. No biopsy or CT scan was performed prior to scheduling surgery. Lilly’s surgery was scheduled within days. I was told I would receive updates during the procedure because the veterinarian “would not know exactly what it was until she went under,” but I did not receive any calls. When Lilly was discharged later that night, the surgical notes emphasized full dental extractions due to infection, while the large mass — the primary reason for our visit — appeared secondary in focus. This was proved in Dr Loris notes. Twenty staples were placed down her neck. After surgery, the mass continued to grow rapidly. Lilly became increasingly uncomfortable. At follow-up visits, I was not permitted to speak directly with the veterinarian who performed the surgery and was not allowed to accompany my dog. During one visit, I was informed by Dr. Lori’s daughter that they “may have removed the wrong thing” and that Lilly might require a “recheck surgery” at our expense. My poor lilly went through that for no reason. At another follow-up, Lilly was taken to the back by staff without me present. She has significant anxiety and does not do well when separated from me. When she was returned, two holes had been created in the area of the mass and a rope was placed around her mouth in an apparent attempt to drain infection. I was not consulted beforehand. At this point , lilly was in extreme discomfort, rotting flesh was sitting in her mouth, and that rotting flesh created an odor Lily had to endure everyday after that surgery. We finally sought care elsewhere. The new doctor explained that a CT scan would have been the definitive way to diagnose the mass and stated there was no documented medical evidence that Lilly’s salivary gland required removal. Attempts were made to contact Critter Care for clarification, and conflicting information was provided regarding the reason for the gland removal. Not one of her statements Dr Lori came up with , backed up with evidence as to why she did the surgery she performed on lilly. The doctor was told - by Dr Lori - that our initial vet we went to before critter care verbally instructed them to remove a salivary gland. That statement was false. Dr Lori was trying to cover up the damage that had already been done. The initial vet we went to had told us they did not know what the growth was. By that time, the tumor had grown significantly. We were ultimately told it was cancer and not treatable. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize Lilly days later on February 6th. My dog endured invasive surgery, full dental extraction, and significant suffering without a confirmed diagnosis or clear communication.
